Now, now, Quixote. He didn't say "undesirable consequences," he just said "consequences."  Whether the girls should have accepted the ride depends entirely on your point of view, I'll admit. But there being consequences to one's actions seems to me something that's beyond argument.

Consequences can be brutal.  I used to hitchhike ALL the time as a young teen and was rather lucky to have only had two scarey experiences and probably more that I was not aware of.  One was just a wanker that I screamed at and he let me out.  The other was more scarey.   I feel quite lucky now that I look back on it.  A guy picked my brother and I up after a concert and took us back to our home town.  He mentioned, after he was about to drop us off, that he had some drugs that piqued my interest so I stayed with him and went for a ride.  He took me out to a dark, levy road. Water on both sides of the slim road and stopped the car.  He leaned towards me and I got a little creeped out and reached for the door but his arm was over my shoulders before I could open the door and he hit the lock.  I felt panic well up inside and may have even started to cry and then he spoke to me and told me he could do anything he wanted and that this was the danger of hitchhiking.  Then he just removed his arm and started the car and took me back to where he'd dropped my brother off.    That may have been my lucky day/night.
