You tease those distinctions out very nicely, Sterling. I concur.

My favorite would be the institution. A prison, especially a political prison or POW camp is best. Sterling 7's comment about pre-established despair is, like all of his comments, interesting and well thought out. In a way, that may be what appeals to me - the idea that she is caught up by a huge, impersonal mechanism that will relentlessly break her, physically and psychologically. Proof, I suppose, that we are all different.

Blackmail is good for carrying out a simple rape, since the fact of her reluctant consent, combined with the knowledge that her own actions helped bring this about, may intensify her self loathing. But for serious torture a carefully planned abduction is probably better. So these two are just about tied for second place as far as I'm concerned. Hasty abduction and purchase don't interest me nearly as much.

Safe in your bed, in your home, in your sanctuary - that night when you turned out the lights perfectly confident and blissfully not thinking that anything could or would harm you. And then everything is taken from you, right there in your own bed, the one you never want to sleep in again, the house you want to burn because of the memories it holds...

I like the idea of being the subject of a carefully planned abduction. That way he has all possibilities accounted for, and can easily take me to a well though out place far from civilization so I have no hope of rescue, and he can delight in hearing me scream as loud as I want. I also love the idea of minimum or no restraint because he knows there is no where I can run to or hope to get away...plus I like the idea that he is egotistical enough that he wants to savor his power over me by being the only thing holding me, overpowering me, owning me. Besides, if he has carefully planned out everything, including the site, he will have plenty of time to have laid in a massive store of horrible torture devices. (Aren't I just all sunshine and rainbows!) =)
