Firstly, this is a very sad story.

Having said that, if you look up other articles on the story (eg http://www.news.com.au/story/0,23599,24133445-2,00.html), the problem was that the woman had no interest in bondage, and her husband talked her into tying him up. Pretty much the same as if a husband forces his wife to go hunting with him, even though she has no idea how to use a firearm, and she ends up accidentally shooting him.

The other bad part of it (aside from the obvious tragedy) is that this is the sort of story that makes people who know I'm into S&M say things like 'I'm worried about you - don't people DIE doing that?"

Just goes to show ya.. this stuff is serious and really needs to be done with a great measure of thoughtfulness.  Its sad but doesnt seem like something she otta go to prison for.. very sad.

In general, I've never seen the point in sending people to prison for things that there is no way they are going to do again.  Doesn't seem to serve a purpose.  People should know to be careful, but I'm pretty sure that the story would do that, even without a jail term.

I've also never seen the point in sending people to prison for being morons.

I agree with you there Quix.   It seems almost criminal to use the 'justice' system the way it is currently used.     We have a psychotic amount of people in jails for retarded crimes...     It would seem that we could come up with a better way to spend tax dollars... hmmm how about new schools and more pay for teachers instead and see if that doesn't just help the crime rate fall some???

Ever since I found out that America has reached the point where it imprisons a higher percentage of its population than Russia did under Stalin I've been pretty depressed about the whole thing.

And then there was the year in Britain that I noticed two unrelated news stories.  First, a crazed judge who should be beaten to death sentenced a rapist to pay for his victim to take a vacation.  Then, a different judge who should be beaten to death sentenced a perpetrator of grafitti to two years in prison.  Sentencing guidelines, anyone?

The world is run by madmen.  And not the good kind of madmen, like us.

If I start ranting about all the things that America should be doing with its money I risk breaking my keyboard.  But yeah, more funding to public education might be a nice place to start.
